How to choose cat litter in Dubai
Clumping vs crystal vs natural litters — which works best in apartment living, how to control odour in the heat, and how often to change it.
The three main types
Clumping clay is the UAE favourite: easy to scoop, good odour control and widely available. Crystal (silica) litter absorbs more moisture and lasts longer between changes — helpful in humid months — but some cats dislike the texture. Natural litters (corn, wood, paper) are lighter and flushable in small amounts, though they usually need more frequent changing.
Odour control in apartments
In Dubai apartments, ventilation is limited and heat amplifies smell. Scoop twice daily, keep the tray away from direct sun, and do a full litter change weekly for clay or every 3–4 weeks for crystal. An open-top tray with a charcoal mat under it beats a closed box for airflow.
If odour persists despite good hygiene, it can signal a diet issue — a higher-quality protein source often reduces smell at the source.
Switching litters without protest
Cats hate sudden change. Mix 25% new litter into the old for a few days, then 50%, then 75%. If your cat stops using the tray, go back a step and slow down.
