Keeping an indoor cat happy in a Dubai apartment
Enrichment, vertical space and routine for apartment cats — how to prevent boredom, scratching damage and weight gain.
Think vertical, not square metres
Cats measure territory in height. A cat tree by the window, a couple of wall shelves and a clear windowsill give a small apartment more 'cat space' than an extra room would. Window perches with a view of birds are endlessly entertaining.
Play like prey
Two short wand-toy sessions a day mimic hunting and burn energy that would otherwise go into 3am sprints. Rotate toys weekly — a 'new' toy from the cupboard is as exciting as one from the shop. Puzzle feeders slow eating and add mental work.
Scratching and claws
Provide both vertical and horizontal scratchers near sleeping spots — cats stretch-scratch after waking. Sisal posts outlast cardboard in the UAE's dry indoor air. Place a scratcher directly in front of any furniture corner your cat has claimed.
